WHO Who whooo's who in Children's Lit 2007

The American Library Association made its major award announcements (Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King...) this morning. Special congratulations to fellow Washington state authors Kirby Larson (Newbery Honors for Hattie Big Sky) and Laura McGee Kvasnosky (The Theodor Seuss Geisel Beginning Reader Award for Zelda and Ivy: The Runaways)!

PS. Congrats as well to one of my favorite "new" illustrators, Matt Phelan. He is the illustrator for The Higher Power of Lucky, this year's Newbery Award Winner.

Art Exchange '07 No. 1

A new Art Exchange for 2007. This year's featured participant, Gaio Lakin, is a friend from college. I'll be posting images here (hopefully from both of us) in lieu of futher complicating my website. Cheers!

A tad bit more about this particular image: Not really any non-cable television where I live, but we do get NBC on the radio. As a result, several mornings a week I draw while listening to the Today Show and Ellen Degeneres. Ellen's pretty funny, and seems to have this thing for dancing :) Henceforth, this sax jammin' bear kicks off a series of sorts that is dedicated to any and all fans of The Ellen Degeneres Show. Inspiration abounds!

The Go Magazine Article

There was a nice story about my books and my recent move to Washington state in last week's Wenatchee World. Great color book covers throughout! A big thanks to Jefferson Robbins for supporting local artists and writers.

A "Comic" Process

I'm just starting a school visit residency (creating a picturebook with 6th graders) and thought that a comic about my process -- my first book in particular -- might be a fun way to reinforce some of the ideas. This is just the beginning, but if I pull it all off in some sensible way then I might just post the rest. Enjoy!
